Fall Lawn Care Checklist for Frederick County Homeowners

Ask any lawn pro when a great spring lawn is made and they will say the same thing: the fall before. Roots grow, seed takes hold, and weeds get stopped while the weather is on your side. Here is the checklist we work through in Frederick County every autumn.
The checklist, in order
- Keep mowing — then finish lower. Stay on a weekly cut through October. For the final cut of the year, drop the deck to about 2.5–3 inches so the lawn heads into winter neat and less prone to matting and snow mold.
- Never let leaves sit. A wet blanket of leaves for even two weeks can smother fescue and leave dead patches. Mulch-mow light leaves if you like, but heavy layers need to come off — this is bagging season.
- Aerate compacted soil. Core aeration opens up the hard, walked-on soil townhomes always have. Early-to-mid October is the tail end of the ideal window in Maryland — still worth it if your lawn is thin or hard. (Read more: when to aerate and overseed in Maryland.)
- Overseed thin spots. Seed into aeration holes and bare patches with a tall fescue blend, and keep it lightly watered until it germinates. Fall seed faces far less weed pressure than spring seed.
- Feed it — fall is the big meal. The fall fertilizer application is the most important one of the year: it drives root growth and stores energy for a fast green-up in April.
- Spot-treat weeds. Fall is prime time to kill perennial weeds like clover and dandelion — they pull herbicide down into their roots as they prepare for winter.
- Edge and clean the beds. A crisp final edge and cleared beds make the whole property look maintained all winter.
What to skip until spring
Hold off on crabgrass pre-emergent (that is a spring job, when soil temperatures approach 55°F) and avoid heavy nitrogen late in November — you want roots storing energy, not tender new growth heading into a freeze.
