Weed Control for Townhome Lawns: Hand Weeding + Spray, Explained

Detailed edging and weeding along a sidewalk at a Maryland townhome

Townhome lawns get weeds for a structural reason: the turf is small, edges are everywhere (sidewalks, beds, driveways, your neighbor's lawn), and any thin spot becomes an open door. Good weed control on a small lawn is not one product — it is three things working together.

1. Prevention: stop weeds before they exist

Crabgrass — the wide, pale weed that takes over Maryland lawns every summer — is controlled before it sprouts, with a pre-emergent applied when soil temperatures approach 55°F in spring (around forsythia bloom). Miss that window and you are chasing it all summer. A thick lawn mowed at 3–3.5 inches is the other half of prevention: crabgrass seed needs light and hot soil to germinate, and dense fescue denies it both. (Mowing rhythm matters here too — see how often to mow.)

2. Hand weeding: the precision tool

In beds, along edges and in tight townhome corners, hand weeding beats spray: it removes the whole root, works on any weed at any size, and puts zero product near flowers, shrubs and the places kids and pets touch. It is slower — that is the point. It is also why it is built into every one of our visits instead of sold as an occasional rescue.

3. Targeted spray: for weeds already in the turf

Broadleaf weeds in the grass itself — dandelion, clover, plantain — are handled with a selective spray that targets the weed and leaves the fescue alone. Spot-treating, rather than blanketing the whole lawn, keeps product where it belongs. Fall is the highest-impact moment: perennial weeds pull the treatment into their roots as they store energy for winter.

The real secret: thick turf is the weed control

Every long-term weed-free townhome lawn we maintain has the same recipe — mowed weekly at the right height, edged crisply, hand-weeded and spot-sprayed on every visit, and overseeded in fall when it thins. Weeds fill vacuums; a dense lawn leaves them nowhere to land.

That full routine — mowing, bagging, crisp edging, hand weeding with weed-control spray and full cleanup — is exactly what our weekly plans include for townhomes and small homes in Germantown, Montgomery Village and across our service area. Text (571) 405-0031 for a free estimate.
